I have noticed every now and then that my server load spikes upto around 5 and then falls. I have now tracked this down to be MySQL. I can see that there are many processes of it running, all consuming quite a lot Memory and CPU.

As far as I am aware there are no websites that heavily use MySQL however it is a basic server, 2.53Ghz Celeron + 1GB Ram. Is there anything I can do to help reduce the MySQL memory usage? I have already changed a few things in the my.cnf file but dont think it has made a great deal of difference. Its MySQL 4.0.25-standard running on the server, the usual that comes with cpanel. Would upgrading to the 4.1x tree help at all?

    Thanks
