I have gotten this error the last 2 days:
/usr/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)' Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' exists! mysql has failed, please contact the sysadmin (result was "Warning, no valid mysql.sock file found.mysql has failed").

Also mysql has been missing from /etc/rc.d/init.d

    Why is this happening?

    Not here, but there.
First, hire a proper system administrator.
Second, mysql.sock errors are fairly common.
Third, there is a link called search, it has been known to be quite useful.

Have you done even the basics of troubleshooting? is mysqld running? Does the mysql.sock file exist? Have you tried to restart mysql? Have you tried resetting the root password for mysql in whm? All basic system admin stuff.

I've had this server for years, mysql.sock is disappearing after the cpanel update. Obviously I know how to fix it. I want to know how to keep it from disappearing.

If it's happening consistently after cpanel updates you should log a ticket with cpanel or your cpanel provider.
