The current version of cPanel is running MySQL Version 4.0. This is ridiculously out of date and I can't even do sub select statements. My provider says:

Unfortunately we can not upgrade without breaking many scripts. After upgrading our test server, no scripts functioned. This may be due to the cPanel implementation. This included forums, chat programs and general PHP/MySQL applications. We will continue to run the most current stable release, until cPanel release a stable upgrade path.

When will cPanel release a version of their software that supports MySQL Version 5 or at the very least Version 4.1.x ??

cpanel supported mysql 4.1 about 6 months ago and mysql 5 support last week

reason that 4.1 broke the scripts is due to the server admin not reading the directions and using the old-password option in the my.cnf

cpanel is reasonably up to date however it seems your provider is the one out of date
