Need Help with PHP5 & MySQL Upgrade

I am running Fedora 4, and currently have PHP 4.4.2, and MySQL (Ver 14.7 Distrib 4.1.21, for pc-linux-gnu (i686)).
-WHM 10.8.0 cPanel 10.8.2-R119
-Fedora i686 - WHM X v3.1.0

I've been reading, and re-reading these forums for couple of weeks now on and off, trying to figure out how to upgrade to PHP 5 (seems 5.1.16 is avail, though I am not picky, just as new as I can and should be using), same with MySQL. Just so it is clear, I want the newer PHP's for things like the PDO (DB layer / access), and other good stuff.

Forgive me if I missed this, but can anyone help tell me how to do this. I see the "Apache Build /Upgrade" screen. Does that actually build the PHP and / or MySQL? or only link in a copy that I need to either build manually or download as an RPM or something. I've seen what appears to be a lot of conflicting answers on this, hence the hesitation. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Just wich CPanel / WHM had a help section that covered this stuff (if they do maybe it should be easier to find?).

Thanks.
Allan.

Thanks Hergy80. That really helps with the MySQL. The MySQL, now sounds pretty straight forward.

For the PHP5 though, I am unsure what options I would be likely to want. I realize / imagine this is a pretty generic question, based on my needs, and so on. But I am not sure which options I should be choosing. I would imagine there should be a config that one should most likely have / want.

Not to mention all the many options on Apache. Since I am going to be rebuilding it, as part of the process. I don't necessarily need to upgrade Apache. If it is a good idea, then I am all for it. Just being careful as I don't want to hose the server, and need a reload.

Again, any thoughts advice, very, very much appreciated.

I guess let me ask this. What files (config or otherwise) should I be backing up (specific file names if you know them please), before I do the upgrades.

One thing I did find, is not to have the Versioning option set for the PHP5.

Anyone else have any further advice on how to upgrade my PHP from 4 to 5? Like the options under Apache for "PHP suExec support", the "suExec Module". The PHP options like, "OpenSSL Support (off by default), and MCrypt?

Thanks in advance for the thoughts.

Once I perform the upgrades, I am imagining my security, from the default installation, will probably be pretty weak. Any thoughts there?
