netstat - Print network connections, routing tables, interface statistics, masquerade connec-
    tions, and multicast memberships

so it's a tool that displays current connections to/from your server.

    typical output of netstat:

    tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:21 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 17011/pure-ftpd
    tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:2583 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 24093/perl
    tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:5432 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 11009/postmaster

so netstat is an ok process in linux.

    BUT.

i'd recommend running a rootkit checker. netstat doesn't eat up so much CPU. I think it's a process desquised as netstat.
