I have wanted a new skin for CPanel for quite some time...but never really wanted to pay someone else to make one (one of those &why pay someone else if you can do it& things) I just never really had time, until today. I started out with the X-Skins theme, and tweaked and hacked away. I added all three addon scripts where they below (eg OSC in the shopping cart area). I am pretty happy with it. I dumbed it down a little for my customers though. I dont beleive it giving customers too much to play with. If a customer wants something (that isn't on there) they can ask....but this way it keeps the snooping customers out. (Dont really want &Mr Beginner& playing with the SSH button. :) Anyway...here is the screenshot: http://mksolutions.net/images/screenshot.jpg

So...what do you think? Feedback please!

According the the XSkin site:

&What if I want to customize them?
The X SKINS are licensed under the General Public License (GPL). You are free to modify them to suit your needs as long as you don't remove the copyright notices.&

I have fully complied with this, so I dont see a problem. Am I incorrect?

Thanks!

Thanks.....I didn't want to step on any toes either.

Thanks for the comments. This just goes to show that customizing themes isn't as hard as it seems...especially if I can do it!

Nicely done!

Is that a link to MB for your Clients -- that I see up top -- for billing info?

Yes, that is. Currently it is just a news link thru Cpanel....but I intend to put a image in place soon instead.

Yes a very nice, clean looking skin. Any chance of having it :) or even letting us fellow Cpanel users have it.

Could even make some money out of it.

Regards,

Brian

I don't like the fact that you used our Xskin as a base for your project. It would have been much better for you to start out fresh. I hope you are aware of the fact that you cannot distribute your skin in any way since it uses most of Xskin features, such as framing, icons, colors, layout, etc.

Yes he can edit it but only for his own needs, I think Bert's point was that he cannot redistribute the modified theme in any form.

Hi,
When I download a skin my host can use it fine, but if I then go and edit it, they say there is an error while trying to enable it. Do I have to do anything special once I've finnished hacking a skin to make it work?

Yes he can. As long as he discloses it in the same GPL license as he recieved it.

I've read the GNU GPL license.

Here is alittle piece out of the FAQ.

What the GPL requires is that he must have the freedom to distribute a copy to you if he wishes to. Once the copyright holder does distribute a copy program to someone, that someone can then redistribute the program to you, or to anyone else, as he sees fit.
Now I'm not an attorney but I do have alittle bit of experience with GPL and once you give someone the source with a GNU GPL License, that person can modify and redistribute it as long as it retains the GNU GPL License and any other appended licenses. I believe its called 'forking' but I can be wrong.

_shrug_

btw, I'm _extremely_ surprised that your not selling XSkins. Most people who develop such an excellent quality skin such as XSkin is requiring payment in some form or other. Great job on it and thanks for making it available.

Thanks for your compliments kemic. We will perhaps release a much better skin in the future, which will not be free, but for the mean time Xskin is the way to go :P

I meant he cannot redistribute the skin if wants to charge a fee for it, but he can redistribute it as long as he does it for free ;)

How exactly did this new idea of yours start out using someone elses theme? There really is no difference other than yours doesnt look quite as good as xskins. I am the same with you as wanting to have a new skin. I finally built one for my company, and I started from virtually scratch. Your main objective has not been resolved. GPL or not if you wanted a "New Skin" you should have started out with anything but the ideas in your own head.

I once was going to distribute the first free theme. But I got behind and then Bert released his. I am really thankful that I never did finish it.
