I'm a newbie to the namservers area and I have a question about them.

I put in a url at whoishostingthis.com to find the hosting company of a website. It gave the hosting company but at the bottom, it gave a different url as NS1 and NS2.

So searched for that url and it came up with the same host and the same url in the NS1 and NS2 fields.

I'm a bit confused as to how this works. Why the tool would refer to two url's.

From what i gather, the name server just redirects a request for a domain to from where it's registerd to where it's hosted.

Am I completely wrong here?

Thanks

Name servers can be anybody's or anywhere.
The domain could be hosted by one company, and the name servers held by another.
As far as i understand, the name server is where all the dns entries are stored.
At registrar level, you'd point the domain to a name server, the name server holds the DNS entries, and sends you to the correct IP.
So it doesn't matter where it is, so long as it point to an IP.

My domain for instance is registered through 123-reg.co.uk, i pointed the nameserver to my own dedicated server, where i hold my own name server and dns enties.
This server is in a data centre hosted by some-hosting-company.uk

Hello :)

Yes, the previous post is correct. If you want to learn more about name servers, then the following post could help:

Hello,

Also if want to get the exact web host info means who is hosting the domain then you can do track down the DC with the help of traceroute or by checking the whois info of the domain IP.

Thank you.
