[solved, thank you everyone.]

I've just got my dedicated server set up, logged in cPanel, but I don't know where to start with.

I've got 5 IP available.

what should I do know, can someone give me some instructions of the steps, what's 1st step, and what's the 2nd.

All I want is make my website www.example.com running well on my dedicated server.

===============================
the following maybe are some things I need to do, maybe there are more, please let me know.

1.set up DNS server ?
2. add my website address ?
3. set up MYSQL server ?

Thank you very much for your help. I am waiting online.

Hello,

Please visit http://www.cpanel.net/docs/whm/Edit_Setup.htm, this will help you setup WHM/cPanel and it is displayed step by step.

After you have followed the steps at the link above, update your name servers with your domain registrar and allow 24-48 hours for your domain name to propagate to your name servers.

If you have any further questions, feel free to contact me.

what hostname should I use

Hi, thank you for your help.

Now I need to configure hostname, I have no idea what kind of name should be here or what it will be used for?

it says:This means that your hostname should never be a domain name and especially not the name of your domain!!

If I have only one domain registered, say example.com, and I use it in my website, what hostname should I use here, do I have to register another new domain name?

thank you for your answer.

Hello, No problem :)

No, you will not have to register another domain name.

A hostname is the unique name by which a computer is known on a network, used to identify it.

For example below
Your domain name is example.com ->
Your hostname could be server1 or anything in general ->
server1.example.com would be your total hostname that you would enter in that field.

So, May I assume hostname is just a name to identy myself, so that the company who provided dedicated server service can recognize me ?

In that case, I can use any.whatevername.com as my hostname ?

thanks for your answer, RobertNikic

You can't use whatever you want for the hostname, it has to be based on a domain you have control over. As the previous poster mentioned, you could use something like server1.yourdomain.com as the hostname.

You should contact technical support for the company you purchased the dedicated server from and they should be able to help with basic set up.
