I'm trying to trouble shoot a serious email delivery issue which has materialized this morning.

Incoming mail to any of the clients on one of my servers is apparently vanishing, and not being delivered. The mail log from a sending server shows receipt of mail to the server in question. Likewise, the server in question shows an incoming mail ... but no other log entry confirming delivery of the mail to the user's mailbox.

As a possible artifact, the /tmp directory is filling up with odd entries of the foollowing type:

    drw------- 2 mailnull mail 4096 Aug 15 10:37 tnef.18623/
    drw------- 2 mailnull mail 4096 Aug 15 10:37 tnef.18634/
    drw------- 2 mailnull mail 4096 Aug 15 10:37 tnef.18664/
    drw------- 2 mailnull mail 4096 Aug 15 10:37 tnef.18672/

This is a Redhat Enterprise machine running Exim, with Chirpy's excellent MailScanner package.

Another possible clue, MailWatch shows no processed mail for the past few hours.

The exim paniclog reveals noting out if the ordinary.

Any suggestions for additional sleuthing would be tremendously appreciated!

    Thanks -- Bill

    Resolved

Apparently a possible bug in MailScanner, quickly diagnosed and cured by the great folks at http://www.configserver.com -- thanks Chirpy!

    Further MailScanner info & fix

The bug was that MailScanner wasn't cleaning up after itself when it was expanding TNEF attachments, so it was filling up the /tmp directory with useless directories and files. The fix is to go to WHM > MailScanner > MailScanner Configuration, search for TNEF and set Expand TNEF to "no".

(for folks with the WHM MailScanner interface. Others would edit their config file directly.)

    Thanks to Sarah @ waytotheweb.com!
