Is the increase all Apache (http) traffic, or how is it being shown in cPanel > Bandwidth area for that account for the breakdown in bandwidth?

Have you looked at the cPanel > Bandwidth stats at all? If so, does it show the same usage as AwStats?

cpanel stats show little more than awstats, some 15-20% more than awstats

The biggest reason for higher bandwidth could be that larger images (such as big PDFs) could have been viewed. Since these download and are part of http traffic, this could account for it. The number of visitors does not indicate bandwidth usage, it is what those visitors did on the site. If a person has video files, each video will have a different total size. You'll have to review the sizes for the files to see the differences for comparison.
