Optimizing server config to utilize fewer resources

Our VPS is about a year old, recently generating 500 errors on hosted sites and inside the WHM UI. We moved the issue from this forum to a ticket. From that, we realized the server had no swap, because it uses a Virtuozzo container. The cPanel tech concluded "... look into optimizing your server's configuration to utilize fewer resources."

The long-range goal is move all sites to a host with quality VPS. But right now, I'm looking for online info on best practices optimizing configuration to utilize fewer resources. We do this on sites, and need to quickly do it for this server. No budget for third-party services. Our specs ...

Cache 15360 KB per processor
Linux 2.6/CentOS 6.10/Virtuozzo/cPanel/PHP 7

Now, Plan C. Related topics seen at the bottom of this post have not been applicable. So are planning to find another hosting provider. Instead of "tweaking" to work around inherent memory problems in what we now have.
