Has anyone done a complete OS upgrade on a cPanel server?

One of my webservers has about 100 clients on it and it has been up and running smoothly for about 3 years on redhat 7.3. However, it's about time for an OS upgrade but ideally I would like the current happily configured WHM / cPanel to remain exactly as is. Is is possible to upgrade the OS underneath? What's the best way to go about doing this?

cPanel is recommended to be installed on a fresh installation only.

Backups and Complete reinstall don't sound too bad, if you can take a little downtime for a clean server =]
