Outlook for desktop question...

So I'm building a client a new website on one of my existing test/staging accounts...

I created a whole new account for him on my server, with the exact same domain name his site is currently on...

He is using Outlook on his computer and phone to access his current account...

When I change the pointers from his existing server to my server, I don't want to loose any of his old emails!!!

I have a two pronged question...

1. Outlook has to have all of his old email stored on his desktop, correct??
2. If I have the client change his Outlook account settings, to point to the new server, will it sync all his old emails to the new server??

I hope I worded this right, thanks in advance for the help!!!

If the client is using POP3 in Outlook, they have everything from the server's Inbox but not from other folders. If the client is using IMAP in Outlook, they _should_ have everything from the old server duplicated locally. Assuming they are using IMAP I cannot guarantee that changing the IMAP settings to point to the new server will result in the local Outlook IMAP folder messages being synced to the server.

I would recommend using the utility IMAPSYNC to connect to the old server (from the new server) and pull in the contents of the mailbox of the old server to the new server.

Sounds like a decent tool, but, 126.00 ain't cheap!!! Have you used this tool before? Thanks.

Sure. And I even paid for it (probably close to ten years ago). But all you would need is included in the general RPM that is distributed with most OS'.

"yum search imapsync" -- see if your OS has it available for install. Might already be installed and you don't know it.

You _may_ have to:

yum install epel-release
yum install imapsync
yum remove epel-release

If you do use the EPEL repo to install, you want to make sure and either then disable the epel repos afterwards or 'yum remove epel-release' afterwards. You don't want the EPEL repo to be active (enabled) on a cPanel server. At least I wouldn't want to. You don't want a normal yum update to pick up a package from EPEL that it should be getting from some other configured repo.

So I did some testing today with Outlook...

I did a backup of one of my existing email accounts: [email protected] Saved the backup as a .pst file

I created a whole new email account on a different domain: [email protected] Then added that account into Outlook. I verified the account was working and empty with Roundcube.

I used the Outlook Import tool to add the saved .pst file to [email protected] in Outlook and then clicked Send and Receive All Folders.

It worked!!!!!!!!!!

All the exported emails from the first account showed up in Roundcube. Outlook saves the day!
