We have a client who wants to protect /home/user/public_html/shop/admin/ using htacess/htpasswd. He doesn't want to do this manually. He must be able to do it through cPanel.

Unfortunately, the cPanel area to "Password Protect Directories" only seems to allow him (and me) to get to /home/user/public_html/shop/.

Am I missing something that should be completely obvious? Or is there not a way to password protect this subdirectory?

You can password protect, through cPanel, any sub/sub/subdirectory although it's not immediately obvious how.

When you select a directory, you are presented with an option to password protect it. But then at the bottom, to the left, is a link: Back to /home/user/current/path/. Select that link to then select a subdirectory. And repeat until you get to the desired level.
