If I click on "Password Protect Directories" and follow through with everything I am supposed to do... Instead of getting a login box as I should be... I get a 404 error saying the file / folder was not found.

The folder I want to protect has the gold lock and a user/pass configured for it in the "Password Protect Directories" section of cPanel.

The ".htaccess" file inside the folder (under /public_html) I want to protect has this:
    Code:
    AuthType Basic

    AuthName "Restricted Area"

    AuthUserFile "/home/user/.htpasswds/test/passwd"

    require valid-user
    The "/home/user/.htpasswds/test/passwd" file has this:
    Code:
    user:eCrYteDpaSSwoRd
All files have the correct user:user permissions.

If I unlock the folder... I am able to browse to this file / folder without any problem. But once I attempt to lock it up... the file becomes 404 - Not Found.

Any ideas what I am missing here ?

    thanks,

Got to thinking on my way home tonight...

Why does this work fine on one server... but it doesn't work on the other one... what is the difference between these two setups ? Answer = Mod_layout and the Ipanel script.

I tested this by turning off the forced banner on this account and guess what ? The Password Protected Directory works now.

    Why is that ?

I just got this same problem, but it was working fine before, did cpanel do something in an update?

Same thing, all my pw-protected directories just broke. Were working fine.

EDIT: I changed the URL format for WordPress, so I'm pretty sure that's what broke it. My case looks like user error. I don't know how to work around it, but I'll look in their forums.
