php import variable error

I was trying to program a PHP page. One thing that I need to do is pass varaibles from PHP page to PHP page. I thought of doing this with a registered global and use the import_request_variable() function. However, when I use it, I get the error:

"*Fatal error*: Call to undefined function: import_request_variable()"

Obviously, this means the function doesn't exist in that server's eyes. I have PHP version 4.3 installed.

I don't recall modifying php in anyway, but is this s a definite server side matter or scripting setup issue?
