Well I manually edited the ./config line ( yes, the proper one ) in the buildscript to add a few things that advanced doesn't take care of in buildapache. At the end of the re-compile, I got this:

    ./.libs/libphp4.a(main.o): In function `php_hash_environment':
    /root/buildapache/php-4.2.3/main/main.c:1151: undefined reference to `mbstr_treat_data'
    /root/buildapache/php-4.2.3/main/main.c:1158: undefined reference to `mbstr_treat_data'
    /root/buildapache/php-4.2.3/main/main.c:1165: undefined reference to `mbstr_treat_data'
    ./.libs/libphp4.a(rfc1867.o): In function `substring_conf':
    /root/buildapache/php-4.2.3/main/rfc1867.c:455: undefined reference to `mbstr_is_mb_leadbyte'
    ./.libs/libphp4.a(rfc1867.o): In function `rfc1867_post_handler':
    /root/buildapache/php-4.2.3/main/rfc1867.c:842: undefined reference to `mbstr_strrchr'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
    make[1]: ***
    PHP:
     Error 1
    make
    [1]: Leaving directory `/root/buildapache/php-4.2.3'
    make: *** [install-recursive] Error 1

Anyone have any idea what i might do to fix this problem?

I seem to have cleared up the problem by recompiling apache with mbstring again.. strange.
