After migrating to phpSuExec it was no longer to utilise php_flag's in a .htaccess file, however, we could simply place a php.ini file and it'd work.
Since we installed ZendOptimizer this ceased to work.. local php.ini files are no longer seen.

According to Dan this is how PHP/Zend were designed and he's not aware of any work-around.
Seeing as I'm sure we're not the only ones with this problem... I thought I'd post it here and see how/if you're dealing with it.

A correction to the above, this does not seem to be a ZO issue, but related to PHP 5.1.x ?
