I have a server running FC2 on an Athlon 64 which has suddenly started throwing the error:

ping: icmp open socket: Operation not permitted

It was fine until a couple of weeks ago then suddenly stopped working

anyone know how i can fix this as a script i run for monitoring requires it....

How are you trying to access it? by php? if so you must set the suid bit on the ping binary. however I DO NOT RECOMMEND DOING THIS. It can be used to launce a ICMP attack from your server. Also make sure you do not have any firewall / sysctl rules blocking ICMP access.
