I have a site with a php/mysql forum. Database ist 277 MB, disk usage is 1GB. I assume pkgacct ist responsible for the update. This runs for over half an hour.

Although it runs during the night when almost no users (only some search engine bots) are online, the pages are loading extremely slowly: Many timeouts, once 40 seconds, then 70 seconds, 5 seconds, and so on ...

The load during this time is usually below 3. Other sites/accounts on the server are not affected.

Is this a known issue/standard behaviour or is there something wrong? It's a 2,4 GHz P4 with 1GB memory with an IDE HDD. The backup is done on the second HDD.

you may want to consider incremental backups which will only backup files that have changed since the last backup. So if thousands of files have not changed, they will not be rewritten which would save lots of time and loading. This is not an option for FTP BUT you are using a local drive.

Also, if you do not need the weekly and monthly archives, then uncheck those. Since its a forum, the main objective would be protecting the database. So perhaps shove the entire backup system on a weekly schedule and set that one site for nightly database backups only for that account??
