    Hello,

I have a friend, who has a dedicated server using Plesk.

He is considering moving his data to new dedicated server, with Cpanel.

Will we be able to transfer data without loss using Cpanel's tool: "Copy an account from another server" ?

Cpanel's version is LATEST release, and Plesk is 8.6 (linux)

    Thank you,
    D

Yes, you can try to transfer the domain using Copy an account feature of WHM.

You can try the WHM >> Transfers >> "Copy an account from another server" option but if that doesn't work properly, then there is no way to migrate the accounts automatically. You will have to create the accounts manually on the cPanel server and then transfer the data either by using Ftp OR directly via SSH using "rsync".

    Hi,

Yes, you will need to transfer data manually for each account. I don't think the Copy an account from another server option of WHM will work as the dependencies on both panels are different.

Just some notes from doing 100's of server migrations and many cross-panel migrations.

    - If you have scripts, they will likely break due to different paths to the site files.

    - If you've done security on your old server you will need to have it re-done on your new server.

    - Backups taken on one control panel system typically will not work on another control panel system.

    - Assure you have adequate time to test the sites on the new server before shutting down the old server. I recommend 2-4 weeks of overlap for cross-control panel migrations.

    - Email formats are often different so be sure to download any emails from the old server before moving to the new one.

    - Consider the impact to any 3rd party scripts or tie-ins, such as payment gateways. Your IP address will likely change and these need to be updated.

    - DNS can be challenging if the new and old systems do not permit the same type of records, e.g. TXT records, to be easily managed.

Just a few tips to consider. Changing control panels should a carefully reasoned decision. There are pros/cons to all of the panels out there and some fulfill better needs than others.

If you business depends on the sites you hosts, plan on doing a 1-2 week test on the new system before bringing it live.

Lastly, don't forget about support. I had a client migrate a system to an OS we do not support. They did this over the weekend without letting us know. The system crashed on Monday. They were stuck scrambling to find a new support partner.

Also keep in mind that for situations where you have root access to both the Plesk and cPanel/WHM servers, we do offer free migration assistance:

This assistance is available regardless of where you are acquiring your licensing.
