Hi, trying to do an install of WHM/cpanel on an Azure VM. I've got tons of options as to what flavor server that I can create.

Going with Linux. I can go Ubuntu 16 or 18, RedHat, Centros 7 or 8. I've tried most of them, backed out, deleted, and started all over again.

The ssh install invariably ends up asking for a YUM install and then gets hung on a tar install. There has to be one of those server options that have that ready as part of the system and it will just roll through.

Thanks

Hey there! The short answer is "none of the above" as the only supported way to get this working is following the steps here, which will do the whole WHM installation for you:

Can you read through that and see if that helps get things going?

For a more general list of the operating systems we currently support, you can check the OS section of our installation guide here:

Agree with @cPRex, the easiest is definetly to go with the marketplace image :)

Well, it did go awesomely! THANKS!
However, I have no idea what my WHM login might be. Would it be the same as my admin at Azure? As the login to CPanel?

There is mention of this stage but I never saw it.
After reviewing your configuration options, select the Review & Create Button at the bottom of the page. You will then be prompted with a Pop-up to generate a new key pair. Select Download private key and create resource.

My gut feeling is I'm going to have to delete and reinstall this all over again because my experience has been there's no rescuing a WHM login.

Great - I'm glad to hear that went well!

In order to access WHM you'd need the root user and password for the server. Once you're logged in, you can then go to Create a New Account and that's where you'll setup the actual cPanel accounts with their individual logins.
