I have been using the compression feature for many years now and have never had a problem before. Today I went to the required directory amd selected the files I wanted to compress in a ZIP files before downloading as a backup. This time however the compression has gone on for ever and ever and this means that I don't have the backup and I don't know how to stop the process other than to delete the File manager tab on my browser.

Can anyone suggest why this should be suddenly and how to fix it?

You would know if you had root access, as that is a higher-level control panel than cPanel that controls the entire server.

I'm glad to hear things are working well, as it sounds like it was just a temporary glitch. You'll want to contact your hosting provider or datacenter in the future to have them check these types of issues, as without root access you wouldn't be able to check any of the relevant log files on the machine.
