Is there a recommended procedure from Cpanel for upgrading a server from FreeBSD 6.3 to 7.0?

    Thanks.

Such a procedure goes beyond the support we offer.

That said, as long as you are a knowledgeable FreeBSD admin, the typical csup, buildworld scenario should work. Be certain to read all applicable documentation provided by the FreeBSD project before undertaking such a venture. That way you will know what changes to expect during and after the upgrade, as well as what preventative steps to take before initiating such an upgrade.

My sysadmin is one of the FreeBSD dev guys and he wants me to upgrade.

The question really is after the upgrade will cpanel upgrade the ports or will all the ports need to rebuilt by hand.

    Thanks for your reply!

cPanel typically updates ports during every upcp. However, considering that you are performing a major transition, I recommend updating the ports manually, especially before upcp runs (might want to disable upcp until the entire transition is complete).

We are doing the upgrade from FreeBSD 6.2 to FreeBSD 7 tonight.

My sysadmin wants to now how to keep Cpanel from restarting things (like MySQL and Apache) automagicly when he is working tonight.

    Thanks!

Easiest way - use freebsd-update (if he's a FreeBSD Dev guy he should know this already).

    See here: http://www.daemonology.net/blog/2007-11-11-freebsd-major-version-upgrade.html

I ran thru this to go from 6.2-RELEASE to 7.0-RELEASE last week without major issues - only problem I came across was named ended up broken afterwards, so just reinstalled BIND from ports and all done n' dusted. Didn't do anything to stop cPanel's upcp etc... just comment out all cron jobs, then uncomment afterwards.
