    Anybody running the FastTrack 100 IDE RAID CARD and actually using raid (if you have the card in their but are using it as a normal ide controller that doesnt count). If any of you are, have you been having any issues where the server crash's alot and you see a kernel panic screen. I'm pretty sure i figured out what's been happening with one of ours here. I beleive that smartcheck it causing it but i'm not positive yet. I have disabled smartcheck and we'll see how it runs. I notice that nick disable's smartcheck if you run 3ware cards so i'm wondering if promise has the same problem.

    smartcheck definitely definitely was the fault of a couple of ours.
    yes, yes it was.

    :p

    i thought there was a /script that detected the buggy promise shite and disabled smartcheck from touching it? I know Nick pointed it out before for me--- anyone ?

    I will scour my notes & paraphenelia.

    but yes, you aren't dreaming, smartcheck trying to probe that device driver = frequent kernel death.

    I dont see any checking for promise software. I see checking for 3ware. man this has been driving me nutz. This one server has been crashing and it didnt even dawn on me that it was smart check until a cupple days ago. Disabled it by removing the /scripts/smartcheck file and touching it with a new one follow'd by chattr +ia.

    We'll see.

    OK this is just for anybody out their reading.

    Dont Buy Western Digital Drives
    Dont buy Promise

    If you need a raid card i like 3ware so far. There card works with the stock kernel (no extra drivers needed) and seams like it's a good card. Oh and if you do get the 3ware card and run it on a 7.3 machine make sure you upgrade the kernel the default 7.3 kernel has a bug with 3ware's card and it will thru a opps every once in a while.

    i will forward this to nick too... But here's the code to edit/add to /scripts/smartcheck to have it check for promise and/or fasttrack. When you edit /scripts/smartcheck you will overwrite the first section of code with this. you should be able to see where it goes.

    if (-e &/proc/scsi/scsi&) {
    open(SCSI,&/proc/scsi/scsi&);
    while(&SCSI&) {
    if (/3ware/ || /3w-xxx/) {
    print &Buggy 3ware hardware detected!!\n&;
    print &Skipping Disk Integrity Check\n&;
    exit;
    }
    if (/Promise/ || /fasttrack/ || /promise/) {
    print &Buggy Promise fasttrack hardware detected!!\n&;
    print &Skipping Disk Integrity Check\n&;
    exit;
    }
    }
    close(SCSI);
    }

    Once you do that save the file and do chattr +ia /scripts/smartcheck
