Why are the two directories (I know www is a symlink) are created? Why not only www or public_html?

The www is treated as a subdomain to allow www.domain.com to work. Delete that symlink and the site won't work with the www in front of it.

I think Frontpage uses the www directory, when uploading content. Why not just have the www directory? I don't know.
