Somebody else had this very problem: I FTP'd into an account today and the public_html folder was completely missing. No rhyme or reason to it, it was just gone.I hadn't FTP'd into that site for quite some time either.

Anybody have any ideas as to why or how this might have happened?
I'm scared crapless now that this might start happening to my other sites.

Maybe this has something to do with it?

I went into the site cp to perform a full backup and was presented with the warning: "Warning! the filemanager feature has been disabled!"

Previously, I went ahead and performed a backup, not knowing what the filemanager was. Days later is when I noticed that my public_html folder was gone.

    Could this be it?
What exactly does the filemanager do?

You should notify your web hosting provider regarding this issue. If you do not know who that is, this website may help:

As for File Manager, that is a feature that allows you to upload, edit and manipulate files via the cPanel interface.

This is a dedicated server from the Planet. It's my box.
I can enable the file manager, but my biggest concern is that the public_html dir went missing. What can I or the Planet do about that?

It is highly abnormal for public_html to simply disappear. I'd recommend you submit a ticket to The Planet regarding this issue so they can be of assistance.
