hello, I have a customer that wants to install some type of mail software. It is asking for some permissions I am not sure about allowing. Here is the info I have for the script. I just need to know if it is a bad idea, or even possable for her to install it. Thanks anyone

    INSTALL
    ----------------------------------------------------
    - Unpack the package (.tar.gz or .zip file) into a directory within your web server,
    eg /home/httpd/webmail (*unix) or c:\inetpub\wwwroot\webmail (Win32).

    - Make a non web-shared folder (users cannot see this folder throught a web browser),
    eg. /tmp/uebimiau or c:\winnt\temp\uebimiau

    - The user wich the webserver is running (nobody, apache, IUSR_machine,etc) need rights
to write on this folder, turn it writtable

Open the "inc/config.php" file in a text editor, all instructions are commented on this file,
pay attention on the $temporary_folder variable, set it according your folder name

Seems like a normal webmail script to me, the client can upload and install this him/herself.

Here is the problem she is having, how do or should I give her write permissions to the following. I am afraid it will interfere with the operation of the server and mail......

When I'm in SSH, and I need to set ownership of the folder to whatever was
set for website like apache or nobody or whatever. Ah let me copy and
paste the instruction and you'll see what I mean!

    - The user which the webserver is running (nobody, apache, IUSR_machine,etc)
    need rights
to write on this folder, turn it writtable.

That is what Im trying to do and it said operation not permitted!

you more than likely need root access

    then
    chown .nobody filename
    chmod 760 filename
