Questions about Backup Configuration - retention and size

I have the backup being transferred to AWS S3. The retention amount is set to 7. "Retain Backups in the Default Backup Directory" is unchecked. Does retention of 7 backups apply to the backups on AWS and not the local server? I assume so since each one should already be deleted from the local server once it's transferred to AWS.

Also, I am using Backup Type compressed. How much space will I need to have available on the server? If the accounts that need backups use a total of 20 GB, does it need to have an additional 20 GB available to complete a backup? Does it use 20 GB of space and then compress this to a smaller amount or does it create the compressed file from the beginning of the backup process?

Hello, yes as long as it's unchecked to retain them on the local server.

I can't tell you exactly how much but you will need one full backup's worth of space, I'd reserve 20GB to start, once a full backup is complete you'll be able to see how much space one full backup compressed is worth, it really depends on what is contained in the backup to determine how large the backup file will be. Keep in mind that the backups have to be taken on the local server then they're transferred to the remote destination so any time backups are running you'll need to be mindful of retaining enough space on the server.
