Hi, just today a customer started complaining that he was not receiving any e-mail.

    No warning e-mails were sent.

In the exim logs I noticed quota reached messages, so that was the cause. So the fix was easy.

But the main issue here is; e-mail send to an account that has reached his quota just vanishes!

Why doesn't the server send out a failure message 'quota reached' to the senders ?

Exim does do that, but the RFC also calls for a retry interval, so until that threshold gets reached, the email won't bounce back. This of course assumes you haven't gone into the mail queue and purged those emails.

If the account is able to receive email before the retry interval ends, the email will finally get delivered, Once the retry interval ends and the account is still not able to receive email, it would bounce it back as undeliverable.
