Seeing this in the logs... usually a pile of them in a short period, then they go away... no pattern to the time of day...

2008-01-22 20:27:53 Failed to get write lock for /var/spool/exim/db/ratelimit.lockfile: timed out

    ... And so on...

Any idea what is going on?

You might want to just dump all your exim dbs (exim will automatically rebuild them.. you'll just lose some ratelimits and caching that would have expired soon anyways)

    rm -fv /var/spool/exim/db/*

Thanks Nick. That gave me the output of:

    removed `/var/spool/exim/db/callout'
    removed `/var/spool/exim/db/misc'
    removed `/var/spool/exim/db/ratelimit'
    removed `/var/spool/exim/db/ratelimit.lockfile'
    removed `/var/spool/exim/db/retry'
    removed `/var/spool/exim/db/retry.lockfile'
    removed `/var/spool/exim/db/wait-remote_smtp'
    removed `/var/spool/exim/db/wait-remote_smtp.lockfile'

We'll see if that helps at all. I'm not even sure I was having a problem.... just noticed it while reviewing the exim logs for another problem.

    Thanks again!

There appears to be two directories in which these exim db files reside (Nick - maybe you can clarify).

    Nick suggesting:
    /var/spool/exim/db/

On our system, there are also ratelimit files also under
    /var/spool/exim_incoming/db/

Try using Nick's suggestion but with this new directory:

    rm -fv /var/spool/exim_incoming/db/*

Didnt seem to fix it either.

2009-01-26 06:49:26 failed to open DB file /var/spool/exim/db/ratelimit: Success
2009-01-26 06:49:26 H=xxxxxxxxxx [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxxx] temporarily rejected connection in "connect" ACL: ratelimit database not available

    root@ax51 [/var/spool/exim/db]# dir
    ./ ../ ratelimit.lockfile retry.lockfile

Its like Exim is not even recreating the files

Quick fix was to comment out the following line in /etc/exim.conf

    acl_smtp_connect = acl_connect

Any help with why it didnt work though would be appreciated
