How does cPanel work under RHE3? Should I use RHE3 with cPanel on my new server or stick with RH9? Any issues?

Yes, it works. However, I don't think I'd recommend it. I've had one of my machines fall ill to the famed RHEL I/O bug that appears to freeze the entire I/O subsystem at times. I was lucky enough to have my machine upgraded to the 2.6.2 kernel to fix the problems (upgrading RHEL to 2.6 isn't an easy thing, mind you), but it's given me too much of a hassle to trust it in the future. I'll be sticking to Linux, just not the RHEL kernel in the future...

    Timdorr,

I'm having exactly the same problems you had with RHEL. I wil greatly appreciate your insight in how you solved this. I had 6 crashes on Monday on a brand new Dual Xeon RHEL server and apparently after disabling hyperthreading, fixing quotas, removing Mailscanner and degrading the Kernel it was OK yesterday (only with mid to high load), but today it crashed again during backups.

I need to find an answer quick or I will ask my NOC for a restore to RH 9 until RHEL is stable. It is upsetting RHEL is supposed to be rock solid and all I heard is problems so far.

Any chance you can point me in the direction to how to upgrade the Kernel to 2.6.x?

    Regards,

    elenlace

I run rhel on single processor machines fine.
The issues experienced seem to be related to dual xeon only systems .

I dont have much more info than that

No problem here. I'm using RHE 3.0 and 8.8.0_S74.

With the hardware I have in my server, when I had considerable amount of hdd usage, the iowait spiked and pretty much lagged the server. A upgrade to a 2.6.# kernel fixed it. (2.6.3 is the kernel I am running now)

And now the server runs nicely.

Well, there's nothing wrong with REHL it's fine as long as you don't use cPanel, if you do you have to use the right Kernal or you'll have problems. Other then that REHL is very stable.
