An account has example.com as its domain, hosting on a dedicated IP to allow for SSL.

example.com has a redirect rule (setup through cpanel) that does an HTTP 301 to redirect all traffic to Example Domain

So would I buy an SSL certificate for Example Domain then? Or example.com?

I know SSL handshaking happens before the virtual hostname but it's not clear to me how redirects play into that.

You need to buy SSL for www.example.com instead of example.com

RapidSSL Certificate and all GeoTrust SSL Certificates support www or non www domain version in single SSL Certificate

Condition: You need to buy SSL for www.yourdomain.tld

The first choice should be to buy an SSL for /www.example.com instead example.com however it would be good to secure connection for both www and non www. There are numerous of SSL certificates from Symantec, Thawte, GeoTrust, RapidSSL which offer this privilege at competitive prices.
