    Two emails from the same ISP/IP address are sent to user@dom2.se. One is from john.doe@dom1.se and it gets through. The other fails because "Relay access denied". It is relaying through relay.wineasy.se. Why is one relaying, and what should I tell this client about reconfiguring his email setup? Thanks

    dom1.se is NOT on the server
    dom2.se IS on the server

    Success:
    Code:
    2006-01-25 09:45:34 1F1ltu-0005Mx-IH <= john.doe@dom1.se H=(xxx01.ltvastmanland.se) [193.180.x.x] P=esmtp S=738 id=xxxxxx.xxxxxx-ONC1257101.00510851-C1257101.0051132B@ltv.se
    2006-01-25 09:45:35 1F1ltu-0005Mx-IH => user <user@dom2.se> R=virtual_user T=virtual_userdelivery
    2006-01-25 09:45:35 1F1ltu-0005Mx-IH Completed

    Failure:
    Code:
    2006-01-25 08:49:43 H=(xxx01.ltvastmanland.se) [193.180.x.x] sender verify fail for <jane.doe@dom1.se>: response to "RCPT TO:<jane.doe@dom1.se>" from relay.wineasy.se [195.42.198.23] was: 554 <jane.doe@dom1.se>: Relay access denied
    2006-01-25 08:49:43 H=(xxx01.ltvastmanland.se) [193.180.x.x] F=<jane.doe@dom1.se> rejected RCPT <user@dom2.se>: Sender verify failed

    Go on, have a guess
    The reason for the failue is in the error:

    sender verify fail for <jane.doe@dom1.se>: response to "RCPT TO:<jane.doe@dom1.se>" from relay.wineasy.se [195.42.198.23] was: 554

    So, exim did a callout sender verification, i.e. it tried to start the SMTP protocol attempt to reply to the sending email address at the supplied SMTP server and that SMTP server wouldn't accept an email for delivery. So, the sending email server isn't setup correctly to receive email for addresses that it's sending from.

    Solutions:

    1. The sender needs to fix their SMTP servers

    2. Disable sender verification callouts (but accept more spam)
