    Ok I got your attention!!

    Seriously!!

I found a program called Cute FTP Pro. I have been using it for 2 weeks and backing up my server.

Download the program it has a free 30 trial.

Then go to tools and choose backup or mirror.

Play with it, if you like it then go for it.

NO I do not work for the company. I just saw many people ask about this type of program and I found it and want to share as so many others have helped me!!

    :D :D

You must have an awefully big internet connection to do backups on your local machine? If I was to do that with the new ADSL im getting it would probably cost me in the tens of thousands monthly for bandwidth fees to do that!

My DSL isn't unlimited, but I have enough bandwidth to keep all the important stuff backed up on my home computer weekly.

Is this through root and mirrors the whole server?

Or is it just backing up indavidual accounts, one by one.

    Thanks,

    -Charles

It opens to root and then you just go up one level and then mirror the whole site. Takes a while but after the first time you can set it to just do changed files,

CuteFTP Pro 3.1 is the best in my opinion. I luv it and use it every day. The option you speak of does not work on all servers though, but is still a great option if you have the ability to use it.

I would have to highly recommend that you do not use the user "root" via ftp.....

that send your root password over clear text......for any average script kiddie...you are just handing the keys to your server over....

better at least tunnel that connection over ssh.

    anyway..just my 02 cents.

    no..not hostkeys...

    pki keys...for login authentication....

much more secure then passwords alone

Not sure whata pki is. But it creates your own Private and Public key for SSH2 connections for login

    And also encryption...

MD4 (S/Key) - A system that encrypts your password a different way every time it is sent.

MD5 (S/Key) - The same system as MD4, with more complex encryption scheme.

    Since we are chatting here..

What parts do you back up with this.

Just the home partition or do you back up other partition or areas as well?

BTW it's great of you to post info on this.

And as far as multiple servers is this a problem?

    -Charles :)

If you have multiple servers you could back up to each other.

    Thanks,

What about if you have 20 servers can back all the servers to one server using this software?

Assuming it had the space and everything.

I was just wondering how versatile the program is..
