Perhaps someone may be able to explain something strange we've found.

We have a number of CPanel servers, and on all the full servers the first line of resolv.conf is always

    nameserver 1.2.3.4

where 1.2.3.4 is the server's main IP address.

We have one VPS (Virtuozzo) and on this if we have resolv.conf as described above then the VPS will absolutely not resolve any external domains. If we change the first line of resolv.conf to

    nameserver 127.0.0.1

then all is immediately fine, it resolves external domains no problem.

Is this a VPS thing? A Virtuozzo thing? What's the reason? Tks!

    Go on, have a guess
You probably have recursion set to no in /etc/named.conf on the VPS and it's preventing local lookups to the main IP address.
