I would like to restrict access to port 2086 and 2087 by ip address.

I have done this already for SSH, but I would like to do the same with WHM (since that's basically the same as root)

    Has anyone tried this?

I assume I would need to add the ip's of the cpanel servers that connect to my server for updates etc. , otherwise I would be blocking those servers.

I could add an allow/deny entry in httpd.conf or use iptables.
I'm not that good with iptables though, so if someone could show me how to do it, I would really appreciate that.

Yes, you can do this with IPCHAINS. I do not quite remember the parameters. Check out one of the many howtos at:

I don't have ipchains installed, the newer kernels (2.4) use iptables.
