I'm trying the new RoundCube in CPanel. Clicking between folders (Inbox, Sent) takes about 15 seconds to show the contents.

My inbox has about 15,000 messages, and Sent has several thousand as well. I believe this is the cause for the slow response. Clicking to the drafts folder (6 messages) is quick.

Since it is showing only 15 messages at a time, why should the total number of messages affect performance?

I do not have this problem with SquirrelMail. SquirrelMail shows the contents very quickly.

Anyone have any insight to this?

No, I did not import it. I just don't ever delete mail (except spam). With unlimited space, there is no reason to, and I can go back anytime and search for messages I need.

However, even if I had imported it, it would not be an issue because once imported, they would be no different than messages that were emailed directly.

ADDED: By the way, why are SO MANY messages in cpanel forums out of order? I have seen many (such as this thread) where a response it shown before the original post. Look at the timestamps!

I've seen this problem before, multiple crons to keep the server clock set properly fixed it. Not sure why they leave it broke here on cPanels forums for so long though.

I asked about that mail because roundcube has only been available a short while. 15,000 emails is a boat load of mail sans the spam. Sorry can't help more on the actual problem, have you tried optimizing the roundcube database?

You might want to ask over at roundcube, http://roundcube.net/ cPanel has made it available for those who want to use it, but I'm not sure how much actual support for it they can provide.

Yes, Roundcube has only been available a short time, but Roundcube itself does not hold the mail. It uses the IMAP server just like Squirrelmail. I just tried Roundcube for the first time yesterday. My emails date back many years. I'm using the one provided by CPanel in the webmail login.

I'm afraid courier is one of the limiting factors here. We are working on dovecot support for 11.24.

If courier is limiting RoundCube's performance, why doesn't it limit SquirrelMail like that?

Would the ext3 file system also play a role in this? I am assuming that if you are running Linux then you are using ext3.

    The benchmarks shown at:

    http://www.decisionsoft.com/pdw/mailbench.html

seem to show that the ReiserFS file system is better suited for e-mail. Of course I'm not sure if this would cause problems on the webhosting front.

I think a lot of people get used to Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc mail interfaces and they load messages a lot quicker than any of the webmail applications for cPanel. The thing you have to realize here is that all of those webmail suites are designed for e-mail and webmail. The servers that host those websites are specifically configured for e-mail. Whereas cPanel servers are generally a webhosting server first with e-mail (and webmail) as a by-product. For this reason you are never going to see e-mail and webmail speeds on a cPanel server that compare with Gmail and other webmail hosting services.

AGAIN, I'm comparing this to SquirrelMail on the CPanel server, not yahoo or gmail.

If you are just seeing the sluggishness in Roundcube then it could be part of the AJAX code that is in Roundcube. AJAX will use a lot of javascript which can tie up a lot of resources on your browser.

Nick just mentioned that this could be a deficiency in Courier. I thought it might also be a deficiency with using Courier on the ext3 file system. If you are not seeing any sluggishness in Squirrelmail then this would seem to rule out your particular problem from being related to Courier or the file system.

However I have seen mailboxes that have a large amount of messages and they load slow in Squirrelmail. This is why I was pointing out the different file systems and benchmarks that have been done and how I suspect that major e-mail providers (the ones that only provide e-mail or webmail) may use a different file system and a different IMAP service to attain better performance. You can't necessarily do this with cPanel because cPanel is designed for webhosting. If you start designing it for e-mail then websites may take a performance hit.

Its only one of the limiting factors. Squirrelmail is a lot more efficient then roundcube.

It would be interesting at some point in the future if cpanel enabled you to add a dedicated mail server or mail servers to a web hosting cluster that would handle both spam filtering and mail storage using hardware/software setup dedicated to the task at hand.
