What are these files for and can I archive or remove them when they are old? I am starting to come into a serious space problem on my /var partion and in doing a du -h /var command I have found that of the 5.6gigs being used on that partion 5.1 of it is in /var/lib/mysql and specificly the files below.

    1.1G /var/lib/mysql/server4-bin.001
    921M /var/lib/mysql/server4-bin.002
    157M /var/lib/mysql/server4-bin.003
    384M /var/lib/mysql/server4-bin.004
    492K /var/lib/mysql/server4-bin.005
    4.0K /var/lib/mysql/server4-bin.006

    4.0K /var/lib/mysql/server4-bin.008
    8.0K /var/lib/mysql/server4-bin.009
    1.4M /var/lib/mysql/server4-bin.010
    1.1G /var/lib/mysql/server4-bin.011
    1.1G /var/lib/mysql/server4-bin.012
    101M /var/lib/mysql/server4-bin.013
    4.0K /var/lib/mysql/server4-bin.index

    -rw-rw---- 1 mysql mysql 105514083 Oct 27 13:59 server4-bin.013
    -rw-rw---- 1 mysql mysql 234 Oct 26 11:32 server4-bin.index

As you can see the dates on the files are somewhat infrequent. I would like to be able to just remove these files but I dont know what their purpose is.

Further research on the mysql site turned up exactly that. The function log-bin was enabled in my.cnf. I woudl have searched but I didnt quite know what to search for.

I made the edit to my.cnf and restarted mysql and now Im moving those files over to another partion just incase but I suspect I can safly remove them shortly.

Is there a performance reason to log or not to log this way?
