I don't know much about servers so am struggling to figure out a problem I have with it running sluggishly.

My server load, which is normally very low, is going up to 5.0 then back down to 2.5 on 4 CPUs. Memory hovers around 90-95% then goes down to 75%. Swap moves between 65% and 85%. It's different every time I check.

This will go on for hours.

I eventually get this email:

IMPORTANT: Do not ignore this email.
**** This is cPanel stats runner on c1093-kc01.xxxxx.net!
**** While processing the log files for user xxx, the cpu has been
maxed out for more than a 6 hour period. ****The current load/uptime line on the server at the time of
this email is
**** 12:05:00 up 2 days, ****3:14, ****0 users, ****load average: 4.80, 3.25, 2.98
**** You should check the server to see why the load is so high and take
steps to lower the load. ****If you want stats to continue to run even with a high load; Edit
/var/cpanel/cpanel.config and change extracpus to a number larger then 0 (run
/usr/local/cpanel/startup afterwards to pickup the changes).

Just to try and pin down a cause, I didn't do a graceful reboot and continued to monitor. 30 minutes after getting this email, I hit a 9.5 server load (4 CPUs) with 88% memory and 68 swap. Later, it dropped down to 3.5 with 91% memory used.

Is there any way to diagnose the culprit of this? My host says it's time to upgrade though everything was running perfectly well up to a couple of weeks ago. Thanks for any help.
