Could someone explain how server load works.

Before I got a dual Xeon server which has 4 CPU's I had a server with a single CPU, as far as I under stood it when the load went up to 1.00 it was using 100% of CPU power, is that correct and if so does the same go when using 4 CPU's?

This is not an official information but you can use this value as cpu_number*1.
For example if you have one cpu then load average 1 is normal and above is not good for you. If you have 4 cpus then load average 4 is normal.
