Server slows to a halt, same time, every day

    Hi all,

Our server slows to a halt (or comes to a instant halt) every single day, at roughly 5PM British time. I first thought this was because of logs being processed, but I've set them in WHM to be processed every 7 days, but the server STILL stops.

Apache and SQL continue to run, but they won't serve any pages. Restarting them will work for a short time before everything stops again. Then around 11pm everything frees up and runs great until the next evening...

Can anyone tell me if they know what could cause this? Could there be something in Cron that is running every day and is a resource hog?

If so, how do I tell what it is? :)

We're running FreeBSD, and the latest stable release of CP and WHM...

    Thanks!
    Desperate!

Login via SSH as root and type 'top'

You will see which processes are running and eating your memory or processor time.

When you type 'C' when top is running you can see the command line of the proces.

I should add that it seems email etc runs fine, as does SSH (tho both can be slow to access). The server still pings fine, and the load is usually quite good for us (around 0.50-ish), not a high amount like I'd normally expect a non-responding server to be at...

    :(

Ok, it's happening right now (actually 2 hours later than normal, so THAT's ok... lol), and this is what is displayed in 'top'. Any hints or pointers welcome!!

And this is what's running when httpd and mysql have been stopped (so perhaps this will show something?)

I am also facing the same problem. All the services seems to be running through the monitoring script. But could not access the webistes hosted, ftp nor do ssh into the server.

    Well this

    load averages: 34.11, 15.82, 8.15 up 20+00:35:13 14:12:27
    405 processes: 94 running, 303 sleeping,

may not be the inital cause of the problem but certainly explains why pages won't load.

Your heavily into SWAP and once that happens its all downhill from there.

Once again it may not be the inital cause of the problem but more memory will help in a big way.

Short term write up a cron to reboot apache every 10 mins will help until you can find the cause.

If you stop apache for a couple of minutes and then start will bring that load down.

The initial cause could be a hundred reasons some of

bad script on the server overloading
    spammer
    too many users
apache settings not suited to server loads
check the forums plenty of advice here.
