i have a linux fedora core 4 server that is used for ftp backups of my production cpanel servers.
i just decommissioned one server and moved the domains to a new centos 4.4 server. now the email from my backup server is not being delivered to the new server, specifically my domain. the only mail send from the backup box is cron, logwatch, chkrootkit, etc. if i direct it to my gmail or yahoo mail is received it fine. if i send to my admin account on this new centos box, i receive an error. it worked fine when my site was on the old server. i have checked everywhere.

here is a blurp from exim maillog:

    SMTP>> EHLO server4.hosting.com <--- backup server
    SMTP<< 250-server2.hosting.com Hello server3.hosting.com [204.xx.xxx.xx] <--new server
    250-SIZE 52428800
    250-PIPELINING
    250-AUTH PLAIN LOGIN
    250 HELP
    SMTP>> MAIL FROM:<> SIZE=6821
    SMTP>> RCPT TO:<me@mydomain.com>
    SMTP>> DATA
    SMTP<< 250 OK
    SMTP<< 250 Accepted
SMTP<< 354 Enter message, ending with "." on a line by itself
SMTP>> writing message and terminating "."
SMTP<< 451 Temporary local problem - please try later
    SMTP>> QUIT

All accounts on server2 including mydomain and send and receive mail just fine. However my account cannot receive root mail and report mail from server4. And if I change the settings on server4 to send to some other addy it is received with no problem. It is not a firewall issue either.

I had this problem a few years ago and don't remember how I got it working. There is an entry somewhere on server2 or a missing one that I just can't find or figure out.

I greatly appreciate any assistance on where else to look/check. I have already checked files mentioned in the forum from a search of this error. Thanks.

Does the backup server have any domains hosted on it that are the same as any of the production machines? It could be its doing local delivery instead of connecting out.

    more info

there are no domains hosted on backup server. it doesn't even have cpanel on it. it sends mail out just fine, it just cant send it to my new server. so for now i have made all my reports from the backup server go to an outside email addy, not the solution of course.

my old server accepts mail from my backup server. i have checked for differences and just can't find it.

this is a blurp from the maillog on the sending server (server4 - backup server)

is there any anti-spam software on the new server that might be rejecting the email from the backup server? can you whitelist the backup server IP?

    aarg-finally solved

It was simple - no reverse record for the backup server and it was causing the mail delivery problem.

Fix was simple, just took me awhile to figure it out :D
