We are setting up an academic server for students here in our college and have just installed WHM/CPanel for them to use and learn on.

We want student accounts to be off the main server domain.

    I.e.: Server name: http://ecommerce.hct.ac.ae

    Student account: http://ecommerce.hct.ac.ae/~paul_kurucz

(like the default Apache public_html pointing).

So therefore, no separate domain name, IP address, etc. needed or wanted.

How do I use WHM to set up these accounts?

    Any help would be appreciated...

    Thanks

    Paul

    Found most of this...

After struggling with a variety of options, we finally found a way to get WHM working in the manner we wanted (request noted in the original post) ...by creating an account that simply added on to the domain name.

I.e. We use WHM to set up http://paul.ecommerce.hct.ac.ae as the domain name and the username as &paul& allows for the following to work: http://ecommerce.hct.ac.ae/~paul

Any holes in this that anyone can see?

    Thanks,

    Paul

Are you creating the additional accounts with the same domain name but different user names? What about the DNS records for each user? Can you further explain this?

    Same domain...different users

    Thanks for replying, Norman.

We need to have about 300 student accounts all off of the same domain. For example:

    http://ecommerce.hct.ac.ae/~student1
    http://ecommerce.hct.ac.ae/~student2
    http://ecommerce.hct.ac.ae/~student3
    ...

So we were planning on setting up new accounts using WHM with the &Domain& field in the format of &studentX.ecommerce.hct.ac.ae& and the username of &studentX&.

This way, it seems to work that anyone who wants to hit the &studentX& web site simply has to type:

    http://ecommerce.hct.ac.ae/~studentX

These are learner accounts for strictly academic uses, so the awkward tilde-name system won't cause any commercial marketing problems...and hopefully it will remind the students that they need to be responsible in using their accounts...

Does this structure look good or can you suggest a better system for any reason?

    Thanks

    Paul
