shut down services

    I have a lot of problems with a very busy server and have just got a new server twice the spec

    I tried to transfer the accounts to the new server but they all failed

    It has been sugegsted i shut down services and try a transfer to see if this worksd

    a) how do i shut down sql and exim
    b) any other tips for making this transfer smooth as i ahve never done a complete transfer of a server before and finding itn hard

    service mysql stop
    service exim stop

    start makes them come to life again, remember to use the ssl with httpd or certs won't work.

    Go on, have a guess
    If you're going to do that, be sure to stop chkservd first otherwise it will simply restart the services (if configured correctly).

    you can also package up the large accounts individually thru ssh. A lot of times account transfers fail because of timeouts.

    /etc/rc.d/init.d/chkservd stop
    /sbin/service mysql stop
    /sbin/service httpd stop
    /sbin/service exim stop

    DONE!
