Simple mail question

    If I am not going to use a server to host mailboxes but I am going to use it as a backup mx server, do I need to have a mail server enabled other than smtp?

    At minimum Exim would need to be running for SMTP and set the mail routing setting of the domain to act as a backup (i.e., "secondary MX") so mail will be held in the queue until the primary MX is online and accessible. The mail routing setting may be configured via the cPanel MX Entry feature or via WHM DNS Functions menu. Courier or Dovecot for IMAP and POP access may not be required unless there are hosted e-mail accounts on the same system. When the mail routing setting is set to act as a secondary MX then e-mail accounts are not required to exist locally on the backup mail server.
