    Hi all,
brand new to whm/cpanel but Im loving it:D

Anyway I got this email from cpanel 3 times now (see below) and when i contacted my host they told me to take it with a grain of salt and that they don't have smartcheck enabled...so if smartcheck is not enabled I should expect to recieve this error all the time? Please advise. Not sure if what my host says is correct.

I had this error. I had already tested the disks with a good workout, and i knew they were not failing

Your case could be different , but i recommend checking and replacing your ATA / IDE cables with good ones.

Worked for me. Saying that, in my output it complained and tuedned DMA off ( a sure sign of cable issues ) , i dont see that in yours.

    HTH

If your data center has verified the integrity of your hard disks, then issue the following as root to diable SMART checking:

    touch /var/cpanel/disablesmartcheck
    /scripts/updatenow

My post wasn't directed to you, but rather the thread starter.

Isn't SMART there for a purpose? Not that I speak from experience, but I would be concerned if this was my server.

    Hi,

Would better check the hard disc for any damage as previously we have a user who receive this error message and after he do a manually reboot on his server, the server does not come up due to the second hard disck failure.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I am concerned but at the same time its seems like others have had this problem and say not too worry. They inform me that it is a brand new Samsung 80g drive. I will contact the data center and see if they can possibly replace the cables and see if that helps. I do wonder why they run with smart disabled.

Is there any pro's to running with smart disabled?

SMART is there for a reason, however some disks don't support SMART checking and puke out errors for no reasons...basically false positives.

SMART is there to notify you of predictable drive failure. i.e. head flying height changes, speed changes & possible internal electronic failure. If your drive doesn't support SMART or SMART is disabled in the bios, then you might as well have it disabled in your cPanel installation. However the majority of the time SMART is accurate as long as your drive supports it and your BIOS has it enabled.

I would say that if you're going to have your host muck around with your drive & cables, make sure that you have backups in case the machine doesn't come back online. Also ask them to make sure SMART is enabled in the BIOS and have them confirm that the disk is SMART compliant.

When you say your output "complained an turned DMA off" what did the output say exactly? I have this message and I'm looking at the cable issue first.
    Thanks!

Well there was no way of making this error meesage go away for me, so what I did was read a thread where the guy posted how to disable smart by ssh'ing in typing a few commands... I did what they recommended and I stopped getting that error:D
