    What a bloody mess. Errors all over the place! DONT INSTALL the version dated Nov 4th. Its seriously flawed, now i have to work out what it did on my server, a big mess is what this is. And whats with the last line? It doesnt even give me the proper information to place into my httpd.conf. It says

    You must add following lines to httpd.conf
    &---- WHAT? NOTHING HERE
    You need to also add index.jsp to the DirIndex
    SO WHAT
    You should also add the below line after AddType text/html .htm*
    OK DONE
    AddHandler jakarta-servlet2 .jsp

    Is this an upgrade from v3 or from a previous install of v4?

    Latest Tomcat installer:
    jsp-install-3.x.tar.gz (Thu Oct 10 20:54:26 2002)
    jsp-install-4.x.tar.gz (Thu Oct 31 11:49:05 2002)

    No i install v4 first, then i woke up and realized maybe v3 should be installed first followed by v4. So v3 installed fine. Now im going to try 4 again or should i.

    I meant oct 31, Nov 4th was my install date.

    No good, tried to install v4 after v3 and got almost the same errors again. This is crazy!

    Just tried that tomcat package on a clean server and boy oh boy is it ever screwed up. Ozzi you will be happy to know that it is not your server ;)

    I think we need any package. I did notice one thing I hadn't noticed before. During the install.sh there is a reference to &ant& I have not noticed this on previous packages doing installs.

    I am using a older one; from the 4.0.3 build. I see this one is 4.1.12. I'm glad to see it's finally updated given the security holes in 4.0.3 (I'm using temporary patches). I hope that build gets fixed as I would love to upgrade to 4.1.12.

    Has anyone opened a support ticket and/or bug report yet?

    So what the hell do we do now Josephine? After the v4 install i installed v3 over the top of it. At least its running in my ps but even that one is flawed if you look carefully you will see a few abnormal things going on. Now you said you installed it on a bran new server and it doesnt install, howabout the version you have running on your other box. Do you still have the old tar somewhere? Im feel better now that its not my server and hopefully somebody can fix this. I hate ANTS!

    We are in luck thanks to a friend I have a gz copy of 4.0.3.

    If you need goto http://www.virtual-hosting.ca/jsp-install-4.x.tar.gz

    Worked like a charm earlier today.

    BTW - Josephine ?

    Josephine figure of speech! Ok i will try that, thanks for making it available. I just posted a TT on this, hopefully it will be fixed. Hmmm 4.0.3 has some security issues. Im wondering if we could just get patches from Jakarta to fix those.

    Don't see why not, as long as the patches do break anything :p

    BTW - I find servlets work great with this version with the exception of the restarts. :)

    I sent a TT to Cpanel guys with a copy of the compile errors and this is what i got back.

    &&An unexpected exception has been detected in native code &&outside the VM.
    &&Unexpected Signal : 11 occurred at PC=0x400BE68F
    &&Function=memcpy+0x27
    &&Library=/lib/libc.so.6

    &&Signal 11 is a segmentation fault, which generally indicates the &&system has bad hardware/ram.

    Dgbaker, do you suppose we have bad ram? I know Signal 11's can also be a result a poorly written software. Funny how we have rebuilt buildapache.sea many many times without seeing this error.

    I having somebody check the memory in my box or replaced just to make sure. Can't image its dud!

    It's tough to say if bad ram or not. A lot of times this Signal 11 error or similar ones are actually VM errors. A few things to check would be the ENV variables for java_home, and making sure the j2sdk is in the path.

    I haven't though seen Function=memcpy+0x27 before and a quick search not a lot of people have. :(

    On our systems the java and VM info is as follows;

    java version &1.4.0&
    Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.0-b92)
    Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.0-b92, mixed mode)

    I know these work with this build of tomcat.

    Mind you it never hurts to have a doctor look your memory :p

    The same security flaw exists in 4.1.12 (the new version Nick has posted that appears to be broken). Only difference is that the fix for 4.0.3 is defaulted to in 4.1.12 (not much of a fix actually - just a hack of sorts that reduces functionality). You can apply the same 'fix' to 4.0.3 by simply adding these few characters:

    &!--
    --&

    They need need to wrap around the invoker mapping in the web.xml in the conf directory (this is essentially all 4.1.12 did to 'fix' it). The Jakarta group has posted that they will be fixing the actual invoker servlet to eliminate the problem, but that has not yet been done.

    What you lose by applying the 'fix' is that no servlets can just be uploaded and then automatically start working. You must now define the servlet in the individual domain's web.xml file and restart Tomcat (or the root context) in order for the servlet to begin functioning. A bit of a pain for general users that don't have anything special to truly REQUIRE the use of a web.xml. And if you are going to restart Tomcat mutliple times throughout the day to accomodate cusotmers, you'll piss off even more when their sites fail because of the restarts.
