SpamAssassin maxs out CPU

I am seeing spamassassin processes that have been running for several hours and maxing out the cpu.

contents of /etc/cpspamd.conf

maxchildren=7
timeoutchild=300

Why dont these processes timeout after 300 seconds?

how do you get the timeout to work properly? Thanks.

WHM 10.8.0 platform freebsd perl 5.8.7 Spamassassin 3.1.7
