    spamd fails, incoming mails not delivered

    I've found similar threads here, but the mentioned solutions don't seem to work :confused:

    Today no incoming mails from accounts with activated Spamassassin are delivered. I got the server notices:

    spamd failed @ Fri Mar 10 15:07:41 2006. A restart was attempted automagicly.

    When I deactivate spamassassin for my account, I get the mails.

    In the exim_paniclog I can find entries like these:
    2006-03-10 05:38:09 1FHZOC-0005Xi-Sv == username@servername.tld <mail@domany.com> R=sa_localuser T=local_sa_delivery defer (-24): Transport filter process failed (127): unable to execute command
    2006-03-10 15:04:37 1FHdp5-0003b4-8b == private@domainx.com R=virtual_sa_user T=virtual_sa_userdelivery defer (-24): Transport filter process failed (127): unable to execute command

    The problems seemed to start with the Cpanel Update. During the night the server had a pretty high load, because I reindexed a vBulletin with 440,000 posts. On 4:03 am (West European Time) I got the spamd error the first time. On 4:18 I got the notification that the cpanel update was complete. The error in this file was:

    When I redo the Update script in WHM I get:
    spamd ist though enabled and Spamassassin activated. But spamd always fails.

    I executed some scripts mentioned here. Cpanel-Update, Exim-Update, restarts of services, ...

    I'm not sure how to update Spamassassin itself. This was mentioned once.
    In another thread I found:
    Is the 2. line to reinstall spamassassin?

    Thanks for any help!

    For updating Spamassassin I found:
    I also switched from STABLE to RELEASE and did a Cpanel Update. Didn't help either. :(

    My installed perl is 5.8.7. I've also done a reinstall with the version from http://layer1.cpanel.net

    When I execute

    spamassassin -D --lint

    I get these messages who could probably indicate a problem:

    Now it seems to work again :)

    I found out that the script which starts spamd (/scripts/restartsrv_spamd) only looks in /usr/bin and /usr/local/bin for spamd.

    The automatic update which caused spamd to not work again copied a version in /usr/share/bin

    I installed Mail-Spamassassin manually with:

    wget http://search.cpan.org/CPAN/authors/id/J/JM/JMASON/Mail-SpamAssassin-3.1.0.tar.gz
    tar -zxf Mail-SpamAssassin-3.1.0.tar.gz
    cd Mail-SpamAssassin-3.1.0
    perl Makefile.PL
    make
    make install

    I found out that this standard installation copies spamc in /usr/share/bin. Spamd seems to copied in no bin directory.

    I copied spamd, spamc, spamassassin and sa-learn from the Mail-Spamassassin build directory into /usr/bin.

    I restartet spamd with /scripts/restartsrv spamd

    Now spamd is up in WHM, and incoming mails are delivered even if Spamassassin is activated for this account. (Although it lasted some time till WHM listet spamd as up).

    I had the same problem. The intallation of spamassassin was totally gone.

    The script /scripts/installspam didn't work and complaining about
    I resolved it by doing an upgrade from perl with the script you can download on the Cpanel website. Here the link
    http://layer1.cpanel.net/perl587installer.tar.gz

    My previos version was perl 5.8.5 on Fedora 3.

    Yes the problem is indeed with perl, upgrade it with :

    Code:
    wget http://layer1.cpanel.net/perl587installer.tar.gz
    tar zxf perl587installer.tar.gz
    cd perl587installer
    ./install

    make sure afterwards to :

    /usr/local/cpanel/bin/checkperlmodules
    /scripts/upcp
    /scripts/realperlinstaller --force Scalar::Util
    /scripts/realperlinstaller --force Mail::SpamAssassin
    /etc/init.d/cpanel restart

    I dont know if anyone else has seen this, but I've seen it on a few hundred RedHat boxes. /etc/inputrc line 11 contains a symlinked directories variable which Perl CPAN shell and installs crap out on it...comment it out.
